- a) Use the text to make notes under the headings below. Use your notes to give a 2-minute talk about searching for aliens.
- The SETI programme
- Problems of the SETI programme
- How you can take part
- b) In pairs, discuss whether or not you believe there is any point to SETI’s activities. Give reasons.
The SETI programme
- started in the 1960s
- uses large radiotelescopes like Arecibo
- listens for radio waves and laser signals from space
- searches for signs of extraterrestrial life
Problems of the SETI programme
- aliens might not have radio technology
- huge number of stars and radio channels to scan
- signals could take thousands of years to reach us
- no confirmed evidence found yet
How you can take part
- join the SETI@home project
- download a screensaver that analyzes signals on your computer
- millions of people worldwide participate
The SETI programme began in the 1960s and aims to find extraterrestrial life by listening to radio waves and laser signals from space. Scientists use huge radiotelescopes, such as the Arecibo Observatory, to scan the skies for possible signs of alien civilizations.
However, there are many challenges. Aliens might not use radio technology, making it impossible to detect their signals. Also, with billions of stars and countless radio channels, it can take a very long time to find anything. Signals from distant civilizations could take thousands of years to reach Earth. So far, no confirmed evidence of alien life has been found.
You can help with the search by joining the SETI@home project. By downloading a special screensaver, your computer will analyze data from radio telescopes when you are not using it. Millions of people around the world already participate in this project, helping scientists in the search for intelligent life beyond Earth.
Student A: Do you think there is any point in the SETI programme? Is it worth searching for aliens?
Student B: Yes, I believe it is. Even if we don’t find aliens soon, the search helps us learn more about the universe and develop new technologies. It also satisfies human curiosity about whether we are alone in the cosmos.
Student A: That’s true. But some people say it’s a waste of time and money because we haven’t found any evidence yet. Maybe we should focus on problems here on Earth instead.
Student B: I understand that point, but exploring space and searching for life beyond Earth can inspire people and lead to important scientific discoveries. It’s part of human nature to explore and ask big questions.
Student A: I agree that curiosity is important. Also, if we do find intelligent life someday, it could change our understanding of life and the universe forever.
Student B: Exactly. So even if the chances are small, the potential benefits make SETI’s work valuable.
