In Russia, people live in different types of homes, reflecting the country’s history, climate, and culture. About 65% of Russians live in apartments, while around 31% live in private houses. Only a small number live in dormitories or other types of housing.

The most common homes in cities are apartments. These can be in large blocks built during the Soviet era, such as Khrushchyovka (small, simple apartments from the 1960s-70s) or Brezhnevka (larger apartments built later). Modern apartment buildings are also common, ranging from economy to premium class. Apartments usually have one to three rooms, a kitchen, and one bathroom.  

In the countryside and suburbs, many people live in private houses. Traditional wooden houses called izbas are still found in rural areas. Private houses are usually one or two stories and can be made from wood or brick. In cities’ suburbs, new houses and cottages are being built, often with gardens.

Russian apartments are often smaller than Western ones but are practical. Many older apartments have combined bathrooms (toilet and bath in one room), while newer buildings may have separate facilities. Private houses often have yards or gardens. Some large houses, called villas, include decorative architecture and big gardens.

Apartments are mostly in city centres or large residential districts. Private houses and cottages are common in suburbs and rural areas. New residential complexes are being built around Moscow and St. Petersburg to meet housing demand.

Apartments are popular with families, young professionals, and elderly people. Private houses are often owned by families who prefer more space and privacy. Many retirees live in smaller houses or cottages in quieter areas.
