As we get off the boat here at Ellis Island, imagine how the first immigrants felt as they arrived in America over a hundred years ago. Between 1892 and 1954, more than 12 million hopeful people from countries like Russia, Italy, and Ireland passed through this very immigration station. They came in search of freedom, democracy, and new opportunities.
Back then, each immigrant had to meet strict health and legal requirements before they could begin their new lives as American citizens. Think about the excitement and anxiety they must have felt, knowing this was their gateway to a new homeland.
Now, as we sail towards Liberty Island, look ahead and you will see the Statue of Liberty — a towering symbol of freedom and hope. This statue was a gift from France in 1884 and stands 93 meters tall. It depicts a woman wearing a loose-fitting robe, breaking free from oppression, symbolized by the shackles lying at her feet. In her right hand, she holds a torch that represents liberty, lighting the way to freedom. Notice the crown on her head with seven rays, representing the seven continents and seas of the world, welcoming people from everywhere.
