Comparing and contrasting photographs
Use the 1.5 minutes allowed to brainstorm and organize your thoughts before you begin speaking. Aim to find at least two similarities between the pictures and two contrasts. This will help you do the task.
Study the two photographs. In 1.5 minutes be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:
- give a brief description of the photos (action,location)
- say what the pictures have in common
- say in what way the pictures are different
- say which of the two pictures you’d use in an informational leaflet about dealing with teen problems
- explain why
You will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12–15 sentences). You have to talk continuously.
I’d like to compare and contrast these two pictures.
The first picture depicts a young boy who is upset because his classmates are bullying him near the school. The other picture shows a boy refusing to smoke a cigarette. He is showing his hand with an inscription “NO”.
These pictures have some similarities. The most obvious similarity is that both pictures are connected by the same topic. Both pictures demonstrate different problems that teenagers can face in adolescence. Another similarity is that both pictures feature boys of a similar age, making them relatable to a target audience.
However, these pictures have a difference. The key difference between the photographs is the impact of these issues on the teenager. In the first picture, the boy is subjected to mental abuse, while in the second picture, cigarette smoking directly threatens physical health.
Personally, I would use the picture with a boy refusing to smoke in an informational leaflet about dealing with teen problems because the picture clearly expresses the teenager’s position.
