Условие
  1. a) Read letters A & B. What is the purpose of each? Which is to: a friend? an agony aunt (a person who gives advice on readers’ problems in a newspaper or magazine)? How is the style different? Why?

A

Dear Sarah,

1) Hi! How are you? I’ve been so worried about you since I got your letter. Thought I’d drop you a line to help you out.

2) It’s great that you’ve made some new pals, but they don’t sound very good company, if you ask me. No one has the right to tell you how you should look and dress!

3) Also, I don’t like the idea of you bunking off school just because your friends think it’s cool. Why not tell them that you can meet up after school instead?

4) Well, I hope it all works out for you. Write back and tell me what happens!

Lots of love,

Katy

B

Dear Dr Kelly,

1) I am writing to you in the hope that you can help me. My name is Diana and I am sixteen years old. My problem is that I hate the way I look.

2) When I was younger, I was happy and did not worry so much about my appearance. I always had many friends and I had fun. Now I rarely feel like going out as Ihave no confidence. When I look in the mirror I can only see my faults and I think other people will see me like that too.

3) Also, I am really dissatisfied with my weight. What can I do? Maybe it would be a good idea to have cosmetic surgery.

4) I would really appreciate it if you could help me. I look forward to your reply,

Diana Smith

Решение #1
  • The purpose of Letter A is to give advice to a friend who is facing peer pressure.
  • The purpose of Letter B is to seek advice from an agony aunt (or similar advice columnist) about body image issues and lack of confidence.

  • The style of Letter A is informal and chatty. Katy uses contractions («I’ve,» «don’t,» «it’s»), colloquialisms («bunking off,» «pals,» «cool»), and a friendly, supportive tone. She offers straightforward advice and ends with a casual closing («Lots of love»).

  • Letter B is much more formal and respectful. Diana uses a polite and structured format. She avoids colloquialisms and contractions, using complete sentences and a more formal vocabulary («in the hope that,» «dissatisfied,» «cosmetic surgery,»  «I would really appreciate it»). Her closing is also formal («I look forward to your reply»).

  • The different styles reflect the relationship between the writer and recipient.
  • Writing to a close friend allows for informality and casual language.
  • Writing to someone in an authoritative position, like an agony aunt (who is also a stranger), necessitates a more formal and respectful approach.
