Gateshead Manor was now a big, modern house. Jane wore old jeans and a big sweatshirt. John Reed wore expensive clothes. He was filming a video for his online friends. His videos were usually about Jane.
«Hi everyone,» John said to his phone. His voice was unkind. «Look at this loser. Still reading old books? So uncool.» He took the book and threw it down. Jane jumped; she was used to John being mean. He did it to be popular. The more Jane suffered, the more people liked his videos.
His sisters, Eliza and Georgiana, watched from the stairs. They didn’t care about Jane. Bessie, the robot housekeeper, made the lights dimmer; she was used to this. It kept the house looking perfect for social media.
John was even meaner this time. He took Jane’s phone and put a picture of her online, saying, “#Loser #Nerd #GatesheadTrash”. Jane felt terrible; people wrote awful comments.
But Jane wasn’t a helpless child anymore. She had found friends online. She secretly filmed John’s video for her own online friends.
Lots of people saw the video. John’s perfect image was gone. His friends unfollowed him. His parents were angry, their reputation was in danger.
John’s meanness ended not with a fight, but because of the Internet and a girl who knew how to use it. Jane was brave, and she told everyone about John. She showed how mean John and his family were. This time, nobody punished her; many people supported her. John got in trouble, and Jane found her voice and the help she deserved. The house’s perfect image was ruined forever.
