John:

• bad-mannered (…thrusting out his tongue at me as far as he could…)  
• arrogant (You ought to beg, and not to live here with gentlemen’s children like us… ) 

John’s actions — bullying, striking, and verbally abusing 

John’s behavior shows a complete lack of manners and respect, especially towards Jane. 

John’s sense of entitlement («You have no right… they ARE mine; all the house belongs to me…») and his condescending treatment of Jane highlights his arrogance and belief in his superiority

Jane:

• lonely (…I was bewildered by the terror he made me feel, because I was helpless to do anything about his threats or his inflictions…)  
• educated (I had read Goldsmith’s History of Rome, and had formed my opinion of Nero, Caligula etc.)  

Jane’s description of her situation — unloved, abused, and isolated — suggests a significant degree of loneliness. She has no one to support her against John.
