Read the text given below. If necessary, transform the words in brackets to make them match grammatically with the contents of the text. Fill in the gaps with the transformed words.  

 

The Russian Winter  

 

  1. With an average annual temperature of -5.5°C, Russia is the ….. (cold) country in the world.   
  2. The Russian winter ….. (last) for five months, from November till the end of March, and causes extensive transportation difficulties.   
  3. Throughout history, the Russian winter ….. (offer) protection to Russia by keeping away the nation’s enemies.

  1. coldest 

Прилагательное нужно поставить либо в сравнительную, либо в превосходную степень. Перед пропуском стоит артикль the, следовательно, ставим прилагательное в форму превосходной степени с помощью суффикса -est  

 

  1. lasts 

Глагол last означает «длиться». В предложении говорится о том, что зима длится пять месяцев (общеизвестный факт), поэтому нужен глагол в третьем лице единственного числа настоящего времени – lasts.

 

  1. has offered  

Действие относится к прошлому, но имеет связь с настоящим (исторический факт, который влияет на настоящее). Поэтому используется Present Perfect – has offered (предлагала, обеспечивала).

 

  1. is referred  

Здесь пассивная конструкция в настоящем времени, потому что говорят о том, как обычно называют зиму. Фраза it is referred to as означает «ее называют».  

 

  1. falling 

После предлога with используется герундий (форма глагола с окончанием -ing), чтобы описать процесс или состояние. Здесь говорится о том, что температура опускается до -60°C.   

 

  1. its 

Притяжательное местоимение its относится к European regions – «их» (европейских регионов). Нужно показать принадлежность.

 

  1. colder 

Сравнительная степень прилагательного cold – colder – используется для сравнения температуры в разные периоды. Здесь говорится, что иногда бывает намного холоднее.
