Comparing and contrasting pictures
In task 4, you have 1.5 minutes to study two photographs before you talk about them. Use this time to brainstorm and organise your thoughts before you begin speaking. Aim to find at least two similarities between the pictures and two contrasts. This will help you do the task.
Study the two photographs. In 1.5 minutes, be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:
- give a brief description of the photos (action, location)
- say what the pictures have in common
- say in what way the pictures are different
- say which of the jobs presented in the pictures you’d prefer
- explain why
You will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12-15 sentences). You have to talk continuously.
I’d like to compare and contrast these two pictures.
The first picture depicts a young girl working in a garden outside. The other picture shows a woman calling on the phone. Probably, she’s at work in an office because she seems to be dressed formally.
These pictures have some similarities. The most obvious similarity is that both pictures are connected by the same topic. Both pictures demonstrate different kinds of jobs. Another similarity is that both people appear focused and engaged in their tasks.
However, there are differences between the pictures. The key difference is the environment and nature of the work. The girl is working outdoors, likely doing physical labour, while the woman is indoors, performing an office job that involves communication.
Personally, I prefer the office job because it offers more comfort and less physical strain. According to research, desk jobs provide a more predictable and comfortable working environment with less risk of injury, although they may involve mental stress.
