You belong to an environmental protection organisation. Prepare a five-minute presentation for your class about rainforests.
Hello everyone! Today, I want to talk about tropical rainforests and why they are so important for our Earth.
Tropical rainforests grow near the Equator in hot, wet, and humid places. The Amazon in South America and the Congo Basin in Africa are two of the largest rainforests.
Rainforests cover less than 3% of the Earth’s surface but are home to more than half of the world’s land animals and plants. They are often called the “lungs of the Earth” because they absorb huge amounts of carbon dioxide and release oxygen, helping to clean the air and fight climate change.
Rainforests regulate the global climate by storing carbon in trees and soil. They also produce water vapor through transpiration, which helps create rain clouds. This keeps rainfall steady, not only locally but also in distant regions. When rainforests are cut down, it can cause droughts and disrupt weather patterns worldwide.
These forests are incredibly rich in biodiversity. Many plants found here are used to make medicines, including treatments for cancer and other diseases. The rainforest is sometimes called the world’s largest pharmacy because of this.
Unfortunately, rainforests are being destroyed at an alarming rate (about 135 square miles every day) due to logging, farming, and building. This destruction releases stored carbon, worsening climate change, and endangers countless species.
We can protect rainforests by supporting organizations like Greenpeace, avoiding products made from rainforest wood, and encouraging governments to enforce laws against deforestation. Also, recognizing and supporting Indigenous peoples’ rights helps protect these forests, as they are excellent guardians of the land.
To conclude, rainforests are essential for clean air, climate stability, water cycles, biodiversity, and medicines. Protecting them is protecting our future. Together, we can make a difference!
