Russians have been exploring the final frontier since the 1950s and achieved a number of firsts on man’s final frontier.

Spotlight on Russia finds out more about Russian space exploration

Russia is no stranger to space. Since the 1950s, Russians have been exploring space and have achieved a spectacular number of firsts.

1957 Sputnik 1 was the first satellite in space

1957 “Laika” was the first animal to orbit the Earth

1961 Yuri Gagarin was the first person in space

1963 Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman in space

1965 Aleksei Leonov was the first person to walk in space

1984 Svetlana Savitskaya was the first woman to walk in space

Russia’s space program continues to set itself new targets. At present it has three main aims. The first is to send three manned missions to the Moon. The second objective is to build a permanent base on the Moon to tap its energy resources. And, last but not least, its third goal is to dispatch a Russian crew to Mars, also known as the ‘Red Planet’, sometime between 2020 and 2030.

Of course, space travel does not come cheap. While the Russian government has given $2 billion to the programme, private investment is also needed. Some money has been raised through offering tourist trips into space. Russia was the first country to offer this type of travel, and to date four people have travelled as tourists into space, each paying $20 million for the privilege.

With its many firsts, Russia has been a pioneer in space exploration and has earned its place among the stars. Apart from technology and investment, the space program needs cosmonauts. Do you aspire to new heights?

Where would you like to go in space?

I am very interested in space exploration and would love to travel to the Moon.

What would you like to do there?

On the Moon, I would like to explore its surface, collect rocks, and learn more about its history and how it was formed. It would be amazing to experience walking in low gravity and see Earth from such a distance. I also think it would be exciting to help build a base there for future astronauts.

Russia has a proud history in space exploration. It all began with pioneers like Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, who dreamed of space travel long before it was possible. The Soviet Union made incredible achievements, such as launching the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, in 1957, and sending the first human, Yuri Gagarin, into space in 1961. Russian cosmonauts also achieved the first spacewalk and sent the first woman, Valentina Tereshkova, into orbit. The Mir space station was the first long-term inhabited space station, showing Russia’s leadership in space science.

My favourite Russian space heroine is Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman to travel into space. On June 16, 1963, she flew aboard the Vostok 6 spacecraft, orbiting the Earth 48 times over nearly three days. Her mission proved that women could also succeed in space exploration and marked a significant step for gender equality in the field.

Would you like to be a cosmonaut? Explain why (not).

I would love to be a cosmonaut because it would be a unique chance to explore the unknown and contribute to humanity’s future. However, I know it requires great physical and mental strength, and a lot of training.
